Today we finished the studi of last week's video. Here is what you said:
- compost : you can make it with grass, food and leaves that you pile in your garage or garden if you don't want to see strange animals like wurms! It reduces the amount of waste you produce.
- water : reduce the amount of water you use with shorter showers.
- unplug things that you don't use.
Then we worked on the audio part of the video document below:
Here is what you said:
The document is a report from a website by a journalist giving tips to go
green.
Tip n°1 : recycle. In the USA, 220 million tons of garbage every year = 82.000 football fields, 6 feet
deep!
Today we continued our work on the subject of guns and violence in the USA with the text below (click to enlarge):
And here is what you said:
The text is an article from an American newspaper. It deals with children and firearms in the USA. The journalist tries
to explain why kids are violent:
- the first reason is that guns are easy to find. Indeed, children often
find them in their parents' homes. However, there are more laws than before, but there isn't less
violence.
- the second reason is that violence is valued in our culture (movies, entertainment, video games...). Kids can think it's funny / cool to be violent.
- the last reason is psychological : when a child gets mad because he is harassed,
he can become violent.
Today we kept on working on the subject 'Detective Stories & Crime Scenes' with the document below (click to enlarge it):
And here is what you said about it:
The text is an extract from a novel. The main character is named Loretta. She came to Paris for a conference, so maybe she is a journalist, a researcher or a professor. She isn't French so she needs a room for the night / a place to sleep, and a friend lends her his
flat. She discovers a man who is sleeping in the bedroom next to hers, consequently she closes / shuts the door to let him sleep / not to disturb him. Then
she goes to the conference. When she comes back, the man is missing / vanished! However, there is blood on the bed... Maybe the man was dead, and someone carried the body to bury it. Perhaps he
was just hurt and he was taken to the hospital. To conclude, we can imagine Loretta's friend is the
murderer, and it's a plan to accuse her.
Today we kept on working with the text that we started last time.
Here is what you said about it:
Mr. Preble eventually gets angry, because his wife doesn't want to do what he wants! He behaves like a child / adopts a childish behaviour. To finish with, he bluntly confesses that he wants to kill her! However / Yet, his wife tells
him that she already knew it. Actually, she always knows what he is thinking. Since her husband
disagrees / doesn't agree, therefore they begin an argument / start arguing on the subject. Once more / again, they look like children! To conclude / As a conclusion, his wife claims that it's not his idea, but his secretary's , although / though he
denies it.
Today we stopped our training period for the oral mock exam, since it is postponed to February 13th. We kept on working the subject of 'Guns & Violence in the USA' with the
document below (click to enlarge):
And here is what you said about it:
This is an official document. It is an extract from the constitution of the USA. It was written in 1791, just after the American revolution (War of Independence 1775-1783), under George
Washington's presidency. The first article of the constitution is classical, it defends the right of the American people to have a freedom of religion, speech and press. The second article deals with the right for EACH American to have
firearms to defend the country and their homes! This article was justified at the time because it was a time of war, and people had to fight the Indians and
wild animals. However, it isn't justified anymore today, but it is still observed!
The goal of that lesson was mainly historical, I wanted to make you realize the importance of the right to have guns in American culture!
En raison de soucis logistiques, la direction de l'établissement a décidé de repousser les examens blancs et les épreuves communes à la semaine du 13
février (dernière semaine avant les vacances).
Today we kept on working the subject of 'Urban violence' with the text below (click on the picture to download):
And here is what we said about it:
The text is an extract from a novel by Mary Higgins-Clark, who is one of the most famous writers in the USA.
There are four characters: Robin probably is a student who is going to meet her friends Cassie and Courtney at the library. The scene takes place early in the morning, at dawn / sunset, in winter because it's
very cold and Robin is wearing gloves. She has a funny feeling about a car parked next to / near her house. When she comes out, the driver opens the window
slowly and points something at her, maybe it's a weapon, so she is afraid and she runs away. However the car follows / chases her, but
finally the car doesn't roll over her, it goes away. We can imagine the driver only wanted to scare her.

Hi! This website has been created to help M. Chesneau's students (Lycée Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Sarcelles) improve their English. It's NO substitute for the regular lesson in class, but an extension and a tool. Don't hesitate to visit it quite often to find out the last updates!
Have a nice and successful school year!
